The History Of Black Friday
The term “Black Friday” is not new to the western world but only recently gained popularity in Nigeria thanks to Jumia and Konga online retailers.
The history of black friday dates back to the 1950s when police in the city of Philadelphia coined the term “Black Friday” to describe the confusion that occurred when shoppers swarmed the streets in preparation for an Army-Navy football game that was to be played the next day , Saturday.
Due to the sudden influx of shoppers on the streets , the Philadelphia cops were not able to take the day off and had to work extra shifts dealing with the crowds and traffic. They called that day a “Black Friday“.
It wasn’t until the late 1980s that American retailers found a way to turn Black Friday into something positive. They used the name to reflect their success the Friday after thanksgiving , which is when they usually turn a profit.
Since then , retailers worldwide earmarked every Friday after thanksgiving as a day for discounts ; offering huge sales to their customers.
Black Friday in Nigeria started in 2013 by Jumia and Konga , 2 of Nigeria’s biggest e-commerce websites. It has grown to be the most popular shopping event in the country.

Any Way To Make Money For Yourself?
Its not uncommon for Nigerians to want to make money off every opportunity and we’re not surprised to see them target black friday.
But is there an opportunity to make money off Jumia black friday sales ?
We think so.
One strategy we’ve seen work pretty well over the years is buying the product at a discount with the intention to re-sell at its original price (or something close). We don’t have statistics to show success rate with this strategy but we think it works well.
I mean , it makes sense. Doesn’t it?
Let’s use this Analogy :
1). Jumia offers 15% discount on a phone thereby reducing its price from #60,000 to #51,000.
2). Mr John buys the phone at #51,000 (15% discount).
3). Jumia delivers to him 2days later
4). Mr John receives the phone but has no plans to use it. 2 weeks later , he puts it on the market for #58,000 which is #2,000 short of original price (#60,000). He reduced the price to attract buyers.
5). 1 week later , he sells its for #57,000 after negotiation.
6). Mr John earns a nice profit of #6,000 after buying the phone at #51,000 (15% discount) and re-selling for #57,000.
At this point , i’m sure you’re very excited at what a wonderful business opportunity this is. But before you get all excited , you should know it is not as easy as it looks.
As with everything in life , there are challenges with this strategy and the biggest challenge is actually getting a discount.
Over the years , Online shoppers have complained of how difficult it is to actually get a “real” discount on products during black friday .
Jumia is notorious for increasing the price of products few weeks to the black friday promo only to later reduce it to its original price , making it look like they offered a discount.
Shoppers are often left disappointed after the hype but its not entirely bad. Jumia actually offers discounts to some products but more often than not , the discounts are on low-priced products with low margins for re-sell.
Hence , this strategy may work but will require large volumes to make a reasonable profit. That is , if you’re able to get “real” discounts.
